On September 23, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom of California announced that the state will phase out gasoline-powered cars by 2035. The executive order directs that all new cars and passenger trucks sold in California be zero-emission vehicles. Existing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles would be allowed to keep operating. According to the official press release, the change to electric vehicles (EV) would achieve more than a 35 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and an 80 percent improvement in oxides of nitrogen emissions from cars statewide. In a recent press release, GM also aligned with this initiative, announcing its plans to be carbon neutral by 2040.
Carm Capriotto, podcast host of the Automotive Aftermarket Town Hall Academy, invited California shop owners and ASCCA leaders to weigh in on the new California EV mandate: John Eppstein, President; Carolyn Coquillette, Secretary; Dave Kusa, Past President and Board Member; and Rory Balmer, Vice President.
The goal of the call was to get the audience, especially the traditionalists, to start thinking about the future. There is now an opportunity to be prepared and to learn how to shift your automotive service mix. This includes getting shops tooled up with current connected trends, such as transitional technology for vehicle management, ADAS sensor calibrations, and autonomous cars.
